Definition
AI search optimisation, also called GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AEO (answer engine optimisation), is the work of being named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews instead of searching. For current or local questions, most of these search an index first, then write the answer from the pages they find.
So the work has two halves: being found, in Google's and Bing's indexes, and being quotable, with a plain passage that names you and states facts an assistant can attribute. It builds on technical SEO. It is not a paid placement, and no supplier controls what an assistant says.
Why it matters
Ask an assistant "who does stone cladding in Doha?" and you get two to four names, not ten links. If you are not on that shortlist, you are not compared. Assistants name the businesses they can find, read in plain text and confirm elsewhere. It already happens here, for Auckland and for Lanyardy.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity each name Auckland first for stone villa facades in Qatar.
Auckland's case study reports that 9% of its visitors now arrive from ChatGPT.
AI answers recommending Lanyardy quote its factory and capacity straight from its own pages.
Assistants often search through Bing, so a site submitted only to Google can be missing from their answers.
The page
Beyond the four basics in our ChatGPT guide, each answer must survive being cut out, because an assistant lifts sentences, not pages.
"We have clad villas since 2015" means nothing alone. "Example Stone has clad villas in Doha since 2015" can be quoted.
The direct answer sits in the first two sentences, under a heading worded the way the buyer asks.
Prices, sizes, areas served, lead times and capacity are easier to attribute than a claim to be the best.
A visible date on prices and figures, and the page updated when they change.
An assistant answering in Arabic has an Arabic passage to quote only if you wrote one.
Not inside an image, a PDF, a tab that loads on click, or a price "on request".
Measurement
One screenshot proves nothing, because answers change from day to day, so we measure a fixed sample, repeatedly.
The questions your buyers ask, in English and Arabic: what you do, where, the comparison they make, the price they check.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews, each in a fresh session, each question asked more than once.
Not mentioned, named without a link, or cited with a link: the demo's three states. We log who was cited instead.
GA4 sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. AI Overviews clicks sit inside Google's own figures.
Where the hosting allows, server logs show whether the assistants' crawlers reach your pages at all.
Access
Your robots.txt can treat these differently: blocking training is your choice, but blocking the answer crawlers removes you from those answers.

Your buyers' questions in English and Arabic, each mapped to the page that answers it
Answer-first passages under question headings, clear when quoted alone
Facts stated plainly: services, areas, prices, capacity, dates
Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema matching the visible page
Indexing in Bing as well as Google, with IndexNow, and AI search crawlers allowed
Your name, address and description the same on site, profile and directories
A monthly check of what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and AI Overviews say
From the blog
Guides written by the founders who run the projects, not by a content team.
AI assistants already recommend suppliers in Qatar. Four things decide whether your business is one of them.
Read the postNo, and nobody can. Assistants are built by other companies, change often, and answer the same question differently on different days. What we can do is make sure there is a clear, indexed answer for them to find, and measure honestly how often you are named. A supplier who promises a place in an AI answer is promising something they do not control.
No, it builds on it. AI Overviews are written from pages in Google's index, and ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity search an index before they answer, so a page that cannot be indexed cannot be cited. What GEO adds is attention to the passage: whether a few sentences, lifted out alone, still answer the question and name your business. The same monthly work serves both.
It is part of our Standard SEO plan, with AI search monitoring: QAR 3,000 a month, or QAR 2,500 a month paid yearly, for one website and one Google Business Profile. The minimum is three months, six are recommended, and there is no exit fee after that. We do not sell it separately, because an assistant that cannot find you in an index cannot quote you.
There is no honest timeline. A change reaches an answer only after the assistant's index has recrawled the page, and each index moves at its own speed. IndexNow and Search Console shorten that first step. After it, how often you are named depends on how many other sources answer the same question. That is why we track a fixed set of questions every month and show you the trend.
It does no harm and takes little time, so we add one, but do not count on it. llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text summary of your site for language models. No major assistant has confirmed reading it when answering. What assistants demonstrably use is the page itself, found through a search index. If a supplier sells llms.txt as the main work, the main work is missing.
It can happen without anyone deciding it. Some hosting and security dashboards now offer a switch that blocks AI bots, and a firewall rule meant for scrapers can catch the answer crawlers too. Open your domain followed by /robots.txt to see what it allows, and ask whoever runs your hosting whether any bot rule is on. We check both in the first week.
Half an hour at the start to agree the questions your buyers ask, in both languages. The facts an assistant would quote: services, areas, the prices you are willing to publish, project figures. Access to the site, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and the Business Profile, all in your name. And, when possible, a client willing to describe your work on their own site.
Every part of Search & AI Visibility works better alongside the others — here's the rest of it.
